Styles of Popular Music

Thesis statement:Three of the more successful styles are reggae,punk,and rap.

1. Born on the Caribbean island of Jamaica in the 1960s .
a. Spread throughout the world in the 1970s.

a. Sung and played on guitars and drums.
b. Other musicians changed ska, and raggae was born.
3. Raggae's special sound comes from reversing the roles of the instruments.
a. Guitar plays rhythm and bass plays melody.
4. An important influence on raggae music was the Rastafarian cult.
Concluding sentence:Reggae has influenced later style of popular music,including punk and rap.

Support:Rap is a type of dance music in which the singers-rappers-speak in rhythm and rhyme rather than sing.
Concluding sentence:Most rappers are young black males,but there have been female rappers such as Queen Latifah and white rappers such as the Beastie Boys and Eminem.

Popular music changes constantly;however,all contribute to the power and excitement of popular music in our time.
